...that part of the reason why I initially began straying from Afrocentricity wasn't just that I felt unwelcomed by the homeland when I paid a (short) visit, but also because as I gained a freer perspective on gender and sexuality, I felt more and more constricted in lots of spaces constructed as Afrocentric.
I'm reading. "My Life in Search of Africa" by John Henrik Clarke. Very good reading so far, aside from the small bits and pieces of sexism and sexual conservatism which sometimes leak out into the words he wrote.
In my group Black Campus Progressives, there is a book that's being circulated amongst some the members. It's called "African Holistic Health" by Dr. Llaila O. Afrka. He also wrote a book called "Nutricide: The Nutritional Destruction of the Black Race." I read both of those books when I was more receptive to the stuff he was saying. I found some of the information useful. But he's virulently homophobic, and when I came into a fuller understanding of myself and the world, I could not digest his stuff anymore. He feels that with his herbs and therapy, he can cure homosexuality, especially in men. :/ I'm kind of upset that this book is being circulated in the group because of some of the hurtful ideas in it. Even though some of the info is useful.
Random: Erykah Badu is so creative. She is really one of my style role models, a person I admire (from afar...clearly I don't know her). Even though she seems to be colluding with Nation of Earths and Gods folks, who have a decidedly sexist program, I don't *get* from her that she allows herself to be completely patriarchally dominated. I get from her that she does whatever the fuck she wants, :
