Virginia Bell Part II (Took Hours to Write)

Okay, so as promised, I'm going to post the information I learned about the Using the Planetary Cycles to Tell the Story of You Life lecture by astrologer Virginia Bell. See the previous post for the context.

Anyway, at the Lunar Progressed Cycle, ages 26-27:

At this stage, people often feel like a change is coming in their lives. There is usually not anything tangible that manifests during the Lunar Cycle, but the feeling does anticipate the major initiation into adulthood that occurs at the Saturn Cycle. The end of the Lunar Progressed Cycle overlaps with the beginning of the Saturn Cycle. The change that the Saturn Cycle brings us is felt first as a stirring in the heart during this time.

During the Saturn Cycle, ages 27-28:

What was felt at the heart level during the Lunar Cycle finally becomes manifest, but it takes hard work to bring it out. Saturn is about sobering up and "getting real" with ourselves and our lives. It is the "do something" planet. At the Saturn Return, it is time to get serious about our lives, our careers, our family lives, etc. It is time to stop "rehearsing" (perhaps by going from profession to profession, or doing other things that reflect the impulsivity and changeability of the 20's) and actually get into the race! This is the first true initiation into adulthood. At this stage, we take on a commitment and put in the hard work to allow it to come to fruition. We bring forth the work that we are called to do at the Saturn Return. Saturn is also a "no nonsense" planet, so some of its lessons may feel kind of brutal; if we don't put in the necessary work at this stage, we really feel it. This stage is also marked by compromise: if we decide we really want to have a family, we may out aside a career we were pursuing to do so, as an example. In summary, at the Saturn Return, we take on a big project that symbolizes an initiation into adulthood, work alot to make it happen. We grow alot in the process.

Well-Known Figures and their Saturn Returns:

And then there's the 27 Club: the pop culture name for the rock and blues musicians who died mysteriously right before their Saturn Returns, at age 27. The list includes Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain. They were in their Lunar Cycle, when we get in touch with our feelings. It doesn't seem like a good idea to be "drugged up" at this sensitive stage of life. Perhaps these artists were going through a lot of intense emotions characteristic of the Lunar Progressed Cycle before their deaths.

We tend to think we have it all figured out after spending some time in the Saturn Cycle, but a few years later comes...

The Midlife "Crisis"/Opportunity, ages 35-45:

Note: The Midlife happens earlier for some people.

In Part I of Midlife (beginning around ages 35-36), Pluto makes a square to its native position in the birth chart. We are faced with an internal or external crisis. We often will ask ourselves, "is this it?" about our lives. This question triggers the intense internal journey that we delve into at this stage. Or else a death, sickness, or divorce (external crisis) may force us to go inside. Pluto is the planet of the unconscious, and it rules the parts of us that have been buried or repressed. Pluto makes the unconscious conscious. We look at ourselves in a deeper way during the Midlife. At the Pluto square, we are compelled to "find the corpse and bury it." We begin to deeply confront old wounds. Part I of the Midlife is all about shadow work. We face what scare us the most and become wiser in it.

Part I of the Midlife is about breaking down. It is a disciplined journey into the dark, and we are "bloody but unbowed."

  • At his Pluto square, Carl Jung wrote The Red Book. He went deeply into his depression and kept artistic records of his experiences.

Part I is preliminary to a deeper discovery of the self.

During Part II of the Midlife (usually beginning around ages 40-42), we are faced with a Uranus opposition. Uranus rules "the long shot." Midlife peaks at this stage and we come to expect the unexpected. Anything that we put on the back burner at the Saturn Return screams at us for attention. At this stage, we should take a risk! If we are doing right by this cycle, it looks completely wrong to the rest of the world. We may break with something (or else experience a breakdown or breakthrough). We often "change our brand" at the Uranus opposition, and do something that we haven't been "known" for doing.

In Part III, around age 43, we experience the Neptune square. There is a longing for more meaning and spirituality in our lives.

In Part IV, we experience the Saturn opposition, beginning around ages 43-44. We see the decisions that we have made at the Saturn Return. it is good to take some time to just observe our lives.

To sum up the Midlife "Crisis"/Opportunity in quotes:

  • "Pray for a big risk and take it."
  • "What is not brought to consciousness, comes to us as fate." -Carl Jung

Finally, the "tumultuous-ness" of the Midlife passes and we experience the Chiron Return around ages 50-51:

In mythology, Chiron was a great teacher but was very wounded. He was born a centaur- half man, half horse, and is known as "The Wounded Healer." People with strong Chiron in their charts usually make great teachers.

At the Chiron Return, we make come back to and peace with the wounds we confronted at Midlife, truly accepting them as parts of ourselves. This is the most powerful time for handling "unfinished business." The Chiron Return is about radical self love and radical self forgiveness. It takes us back to what hasn't been healed, and we make peace with ourselves.

At the Chiron Return, a new life is beginning, and we make peace with the old life. We come to terms with parts of ourselves that are unhealed. Lots of people bloom at the Chiron Return, as something initially frozen begins to bloom. There is a teacher who comes to us at the Chiron Return.

  • At 50, Julia Child wrote a book and starred in a TV show.
  • Hillary Clinton began campaigning for New York state senator.
  • Michael Jackson died.
  • "Forty is the old age of youth; fifty is the youth of old age." -Victor Hugo
  • "After 50, most of the bullshit is gone."

Around ages 58-59, we experience our 2nd Saturn Return:

While the 1st Saturn Return is about "me, me, me" and "how I'm going to make it in the world," the 2nd is about what we want to give. What type of legacy do we want to leave? What kind of elder do we want to be? We are beginning to enter the realm of the elder, though not everyone comes to embody the elder archetype. When the lessons are not properly learned, we are instead the archetype of the "old fool."As elders, people seek our advice. As "old fools," we give unsolicited advice.

At the 2nd Saturn Return:

People can bloom at the 2nd Saturn Return. Here is an article by Malcolm Gladwell about Late Bloomers.

Around ages 60-61, we experience our Grand Sextile:

All planets are lined up in a certain formation. We feel as if the wind is beneath our wings.

At age 62, we experience the Closing Uranus Square:

Uranus makes the final square to itself. We can go for some risk here. Decisions made here will determine the type of old people we will be at our Uranus Conjunction.

At age 84, we experience the Uranus Conjunction:

If we've been living consciously, we experience full individuation or self awareness.

The Neptune Opposition also happens at the same time. We get in touch with our deeper nature and show greater tenderness. This is the culmination of a life, and it is marked by retrospection.

We might do a ritual or create an altar to Saturn to celebrate this period.

Through the passage of time, we come into our full selves and into radical self love and self acceptance. "We all have our own timing and we all bloom at our own time." -Virginia Bell

Virginia Bell Part I

Notes From Using the Planetary Cycles to Tell the Story of Your Life (Part I)

On Monday evening, I went to a lecture (yes a lecture...don't laugh @ me!) called "Using the Planetary Cycles to Tell the Story of Your Life" by astrologer Virginia Bell. I found the information to be really fascinating, useful, and even inspiring. So fascinating, useful and inspiring that I feel compelled to blog about what I learned. It kind of gave me a new lens from which to view life. I think before the lecture I had been accustomed to viewing my life in a way that really stressed me out all the time...like I felt like I wasn't DOING enough and things weren't HAPPENING like they should...I was feeling very unfulfilled on a regular basis and like I just got everything plain wrong. Now I'm like, "Please girl, you haven't even entered your first Saturn Return, you have so much life to live, and so many things to try. You will be OKAY." I realize that these years are a time for experimentation to see what fits and what doesn't, and it's okay if I don't have everything together yet.

Not that I'm suddenly happy-go-lucky or anything...I'm still trying to figure out hope to gain more fulfillment from my day-to-day routine...I still have been feeling a little moody about my workload, and some family issues, some personal struggles...but for some reason during the lecture it really hit me that this period of time is not the beginning of the end of my life...it's the beginning of the beginning...and I have not yet settled into my life's mission or done the maximum amount of healing of old wounds that I will do in my lifetime. Also, though our society attempts to have us think otherwise, old age is not something to be feared, dreaded, or seen as inferior to youth...it is truly another level of unfolding into one's person, an awakening of another aspect of oneself.

It's not about withering up and dying...it's about continuing to live and evolve, and remaining connected to the pulse of life, but with a different perspective...a perspective broadened by wisdom. Looking at it this way really made me respect in advance the person I will become as I mature. And I want to be very prepared for that stage in my life, by setting good foundations now and by becoming knowledgeable about what changes to expect. So yea...I was pretty glad to have attended the lecture.

Virginia is in her 60's, so she gave a lot of personal narrative when discussing the generational cycles that we all go through at predictable points in our lives. She also referenced some books that I want to check out this year: Anam Cara by John O'Donohue and The Red Book by Carl Jung. I love astrology (clearly) but am no expert, so I didn't exactly understand what the planets are doing in our birth charts during these predictable time periods; forgive me if I interpreted the technical definitions of "Saturn Return" or "Uranus Opposition" incorrectly. Even still, I feel like I got a good understanding of what is happening in our lives during these periods.

Each of these periods can be seen as passageways into a new level of existence...sort of like rites of passage periods, if you will. They are turning points, and they are each ruled by a particular planet. "The planet that rules the cycle we're in is our guide" (Virginia Bell, Feb 2010). Occasionally, cycles overlap so we are being majorly influenced by more than one planet passing through our birth charts a certain way. The major cycles Virginia discussed are as follows:

Lunar Progressed Cycle: around ages 26-27
Saturn Return: around ages 28-29

Midlife "Crisis"/Opportunity
Part I Pluto square its native position: around ages 35-36
Part II Uranus Opposition: around ages 40-42
Part III Neptune Square: around age 43
Part IV Saturn Opposition: around ages 43-45

Chiron Return: around ages 50-51
Second Saturn Return: around ages 58-59
Grand Sextile: around ages 59-61
Closing Uranus Square: around ages 62-64
Uranus Return: around ages 82-84

Ok, now that I've given an introduction, I really should be getting to bed. Part II will come tomorrow. Ciao!

Tell me why...

So tell me why...

my brother is getting ready to board a plane to Beijing so he can watch the Olympics. Simply because...he wanted to. He saved up money...he purchased an advance ticket months ago...and he's heading to China. Alone.

The randomness of it all. The utter randomness.

Anyway. These kids are coming to my school sooner rather than later...my paycheck is coming sooner than later...i'm moving out sooner than later

i'm (almost) a grown-up.

kinda.

25 dammit. 25.

here's to hoping my shit will be together then.

My high school had a reunion party sunday. I heard a lot of folk showed up. Just like banneker heads! We all loved that place...we were def a family, as corny/cliche as it sounds. i kinda wish i was there cuz my frienddddddddddddd who i love dearly but who i haven't seen in forrrrrever showed up...next time

Sigh.

p.s.: speaking of drama, i think i am a drama queen on the low. or maybe not so much low. i'm sure my friends know my 'secret.' it's the leo in me, it's the leo. It's funny i'm not often easily read as 'leo' because folks usually expect leo suns to be super bossy, loud, proud, extraverted and slightly tyrannical. Folks see my generally calm exterior and never ever guess my sign correctly. but lemme tell you, all the major leo traits are definitely in me...they just don't often find full expression in my surface personality, which is strongly shaped by the double virgo influence on my moon and ascendant. Virgo is an analytical, fault finding, precise, refined, conventional, practical, dignified, logical, perfectionistic earth sign...as my moon and ascendant, virgo is the filter through which my leo core expresses herself, and it is often an imperfect fit. There's all this tension between who i am (know myself to be) and the role i often find myself playing in social situations. Leo is a sign of freedom, self expression and independence, while virgo is a service sign.

But both the leo and the virgo are me (and the other signs that were in other planets/houses at the time of my birth are also me...but the sun, moon, and ascendant are three of the major influences on who one is), and i think part of my growing up is learning how to bring both influences into balance. How to be a down-to-earth ball of fire. A person who integrates rather than alternates between these two polarities/modalities. I am a single being. Single and complex and inherently contradictory, like all humans. But the leo/virgo split is one of my contradictions.

This description (from astro.com) of that split resonates with me (though the part about power and authority doesn't completely sit well with my anarchist ideals. I would substitute the "power" and "authority" bit with one word, "freedom." I think this society is generally confused about the nature of freedom...we think that freedom is synonymous with having power over someone or something ELSE, when i think it's really about being fully SELF empowered):

You were born with the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Virgo. Internally, Leo has a fiery, ardent, and overpowering psychological makeup. The predominantly Leonian individual is dignified, proud, commanding, powerful, and magnanimous. These qualities are not very well expressed in terms of the personality, because the Moon in Virgo introduces a different influence; it restrains these characteristics, emphasizing your more practical side, such as performing services for others. These qualities conflict with the Leonian, and unless you somehow attempt to harmonize your internal self with your personality role you will be an unhappy person.

[insert: completely true. it is something i reflect on constantly.]

Notice that though internally you burn with the desire for authority and power [insert: complete and utter freedom], the role of the Virgo is that of service and a subordinate position. The only area in which Virgo and Leo do agree is that Leo gives tremendous clarity and perspective concerning the pride, emotions, and ideas of other people, while Virgo gives an analytical capacity which facilitates deep comprehension. Virgo inhibits the natural traits of a predominantly Leonian individual, causing you to occupy a lower position in life and to be subjected to much snubbing [insert: causing society to want to sculpt you into a subordinate position in this life but if you fight long and hard for the right to be completely who you are in all your contradictory, leo-virgo glory, you will most certainly reach you fullest potentials.]

Others see you as a person who does not want to take the lead in all matters (although you secretly harbor the desire to do just that). [the wording here is also a bit problematic for me but perhaps you get the pt?] You are attentive, careful, and observant. Outwardly, you are pure in love and sexual matters, but inwardly, you have a devouring passion. Try to harmonize the power of Leo with the cleverness of Virgo, and you will have total success, both in material concerns and in your relationships with others.

p.p.s: that was a long "post script," i know.
